Youth Enrichment Services (Y.E.S.)

Nehemiah's youth programs are designed to inspire our teens to work, hope and plan for a fulfilling future despite the challenges they face living in disadvantaged communities. We hope to teach them how to transform their challenges into opportunities by demonstrating and encouraging alternatives to negative behaviors through modeling, education, and physical/mental activities.

DREAMS
DREAMS is an academic, mentoring and social development program for low-income, at risk African and Latino boys age 8-13. The program is designed to help participants close the gap in academic performance with their white peers in Madison schools and develop social skills that will help them succeed in school and in life.

The program has expanded to meeting Tuesdays, Thursday and every first and third Saturday year- round. It provides tutoring in specific, graduated skills by age group in reading, math, science, computer training and programming. Other Saturday sessions emphasize prevention and social skills. Mature high school and college students, as well as adult men, assist the Program Director and serve as teachers and mentors.

We provide transportation to and from meetings from the Southside, Middleton, the far West Side, Northport Drive, Vera Court and Truax neighborhoods, and Sun Prairie. Without this service most boys would be unable to participate.

We supplement the curriculum-based sessions with off-site enrichment field trips that contribute to both the educational and social development aspect of the program, as well as help maintain the boys' interest. In 2003-2004 we expanded the program to include high school age participants.

YES Works
Provides summer employment, which is designed to teach at-risk teenage youth basic employment skills and provide job experience and exposure to career options. Pre-employment training, resume writing, and placement in jobs with local businesses are only a few of the benefits the program provides. YES Works also believes in developing work ethics and career goals.
Male Responsibility (M.R.)
Provide support for young black men in middle and high school.   Through small groups, individual counseling, speakers, and peer interaction, we will assist group members in the process of making healthy choices in their lives.
Nefertiti
Rites of Passage Program is designed to help teenage girls develop into successful young women. The program's theme, "Developing our inner beauty", is derived from the translation of Nefertiti, which means "the beautiful one is here." Program goals are to encourage healthy relationships, self-esteem, academic achievement and positive cultural identify. Nefertiti provides weekly group discussion, positive roles models, creative experiences and planning for the future.
